A fabulous 1950's vintage dress, from quality U.S label Herbert Sondheim. "Herbert Sondheim started the Sondheim-Levy label in the 1920's, and bought out his partner, launching Herbert Sondheim by the 1930's. The label lasted through the 1950's, Sondheim died in 1966" (Info courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild). The famous composer Steven Sondheim is Herbert's son.

This dress features stunning all-over waved topstitching, creating a raised effect on the black crepe fabric. The fitted Fifties silhouette is enhanced by the button through styling.

VINTAGE 1950's SILK FLORAL RUFFLED HEM DRESS

A pretty vintage 1950's floral dress, too dinky for my broad shouldered mannequin, so photographed flat! Wonderful naive floral print, I'm 99.9% sure that the base is silk. Huge volume to the skirt, with layered apple green and pink ruffles to the hem. No side zip, just a small opening at the centre back, so you really do need to be very petite as per the measurements, to get the dress on comfortably.

A gorgeous vintage 1940's rayon dress, with a wonderful print illustrating cherries and cherry blossom. This dress has some small flaws, but it was just too pretty not to put on the website! Gorgeous sweetheart neckline, and soft gathered shoulders, the original belt is missing, I've shown simply belted with a black ribbon, (not included with dress).

An unusual and patriotic 1940's day dress, with a matching red plastic belt with a punched dot and leaf pattern. The main body of the dress is navy blue crepe, with textured rayon bands in red and cream on each cuff. The same textured red crepe binds the decorative button holes on the front bodice, and six small glass buttons are attached to an inset panel in the bodice. One pocket to the skirt. Unlabelled, possibly custom made by a dressmaker. Great wearable size.

The dress is slightly unusual, designed as an overdress, with an open front from the waist to the hem - designed to be worn with a light skirt layered underneath, with a contrasting print or colour visible at the front. Competently made by a home dressmaker or seamstress, the boned bodice is lined with soft blue organza.

A fabulously bohemian vintage 1970's dress, reminiscent of the ethnic inspired work of Thea Porter et al, but a simply made, more affordable version. The main body of the dress, and the voluminous sleeves are in a fluid black viscose type fabric - which has the feel of lightweight fluid wool. The deep panels at the hem and cuffs, and the front and back bodices are cotton, in a striking oversize floral print, depicting peony type florals. The front yoke has a panel of coulourful ethnic inspired wool embroidery, and the waist is highlighted with a bold ornate braid. The back waist is elasticated, and the skirts are full.

VINTAGE 1970's GINA FRATINI BOHEMIAN FLORAL & JACQUARD DRESS

A fabulously wild, bohemian vintage late 1960's or early 1970's dress from collectable designer Gina Fratini. The dress mixes bright orange ditsy floral cotton, with two patterns of a forest green wool jacquard. The wool jacquard mixes panels of mini circular motifs, with a more abstract, tweedy pattern. Small silver grey shell buttons adorn the yoke and the voluminous sleeves. Wool jacquard ties, fixed with a silver metal buckle can be used to pull the dress in, and can be worn to the front or back waist as wished.

A stunning vintage 1950's nylon chiffon prom or wedding dress. The off white semi sheer nylon is lined throughout, and has the sweetest blue floral bouquet print, with trailing ribbon motifs. The cream flowers within the print are slightly flocked, for a subtle textured effect. Very Audrey Hepburn in feel, photographed with a small crinoline underneath (not included) and full skirts could be exagerrated further with a larger crinoline.

A stunning vintage 1950's shirt dress, in a wonderful copper toned floral satin jacquard. Striking black faceted glass and rhinestone buttons adorn the front. The dress is homemade so simply constructed, but the styling is influenced by the new look silhouette, and small shoulder pads add structure to the bodice. Shown with a small crinoline underneath (not included) but the full skirts could be further enhanced with a fuller underskirt added. Unlined.

Pairs of white glass buttons trim the front placket edge. The full skirts have a light cotton muslin underskirt. The matching white lined blue cotton shrug makes the dress perfect for slightly more formal occasions.

A stunning vintage 1940's tea dress, which according to the original owner was first worn in 1948. The luxe cream satin is covered with a bold floral print in shades of blue and pink. Pretty 40's styling, with a softly gathered bodice, a flattering waist panel and fluid skirts. Self fabric ties pull in the waist and tie at the back. Unusual buttons highlight the waist panel, they are clear plastic with a silver metallic knotted rope trim. Would make a wonderful alternative wedding dress, or would be perfect to wear to any summer event.

A stunning vintage 1950's prom dress, in a semi sheer chiffon printed with bold green foliage and large yellow and soft orange roses. The bodice has a ruched chiffon panel under the bust, and a gathered band at the centre bust. The voluminous skirts consist of the top printed chiffon layer, then a layer of white net, then a satiny lining and finally an integral lining of stiffened calico. A perfect Fifties prom dress!

A sweet vintage 1950's cotton dress, I suspect dating from the early fifties as has a slightly forties feel still. The light raspberry pink dress has a mini print in blue and yellow, reminiscent of small paisley type motifs. The wrap bodice gives a shirtdress look, the cuffs are finished with small pale pink buttons. Two tiny side pockets hidden under pleats. Full skirted, has it's own light cotton muslin underskirt, shown in photos with a small crinoline, not included.

VINTAGE 1950's NOVELTY "LITTLE BLACK SAMBO" PRINT DRESS

Quite simply the rarest/most unusual vintage 1950's novelty print set that we've ever had!! Featuring a wondeful tiger print, illustrating scenes from children's story "Little black sambo", showing the tigers with parasols and clothing belonging to the little boy, and declaring "Now I'm the grandest tiger in the jungle"! The dress is in beautiful sky blue cotton, very fine weave quality to the fabric, with a scarf shaped panel of the tiger print stitched to the skirt and self fabric belt. A separate matching neck scarf also comes in the same print, plus a wonderful safari hat with it's original hat pins. The hat is labelled 'Mme Evelyn, Birmingham, Alabama'. Would be a fascinating addition to a Black Americana collection, or equally a 1950's novelty print collection.

An unusual early 1930's vintage dress in a semi sheer crepe mesh fabric, the sleeves are unlined, but the body of the dress is lined with a soft pink shade, creating a soft tonal effect. The floral print is typically 1930's with muted pastel tones. The back skirt wraps over the front hips, creating a layered effect. Simply homemade by the original owner, the only fastening is a side opening with press studs.

Vintage Edwardian Embroidered Cotton Gown or Wedding Dress

One of the most beautiful dresses we've ever come across. A delicate Edwardian cotton lawn dress, probably originally a summer dress, would make a breathtaking vintage wedding dress. The cotton lawn is very fine and semi sheer, so would need to be worn with a slip. The front bodice opens with tiny hook and eyes, and is high necked with lace panels, white embroidery and pintucking to the shoulders and sleeves. The cuffs are trimmed with white lace. There is a narrow cream satin ribbon binding the waist, with tiny pintucks leading into the skirts. Stunning panel at the hem, made up of rows of white lace and embroidery, with a highlight of lilac floral embroidery. Simply stunning!
